Celebrating Christmas

I remember my first Christmas at DLES. I was walking down the hall one morning before many students had arrived. Not all ceiling lights had been turned on allowing the lights on the tree to glow even brighter, and below the tree was a set of tiny bells playing beautiful songs of the season. I was overcome with such peace as I thought about how thankful I was for my own children and so many other students to be in a place so full of joy and truth.
To be perfectly clear, there has been no shortage of joy over this Christmas season at DLES. It began with our fourth grade chorus joining all Lipscomb choruses, Campus School through University, and performing with Amy Grant and guests for Lipscomb University's annual, Lighting of the Green:

Next came Polar Express Day complete with the conductor, a viewing of the movie, dancing teachers serving hot chocolate, and, of course, creative writing pieces to cap off the experience:

What is Christmas without Santa? Campus School Headmaster, Dr. Mike Hammond, made his annual appearance as the jolly ol' St. Nick to help put Pre-K and Kindergarten in the spirit:

Parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents were given stellar performances, including Orff ensembles, a capella arrangements, scripture memorization and traditional and modern holiday works, by pre-first through fourth graders on Grandparents' Day:

It's because of such, DLES is full of spirit, love, and excitement for learning, and we are so thankful for the hundreds of educators, staff, students and families who make it so. From our "house" to yours, we wish you the merriest Christmas ever, with love!

We are approaching a season of the year when events, activities, and requirements in all areas of family life can cause stress and take away joy. As I was working this week to gather all the information you need to navigate the wonderful offerings we have upcoming during this semester, I realized how overwhelming this must seem to parents of young children. I never want what we’re offering here at school to take precedence over what is good for your family.

We are busy here at DLES, perhaps more excited and busier than we usually are in November and December. I hope you can take a breath, say a prayer of thanks to the One who made us, and look forward with a discerning eye to the opportunities set before your family.

Thank you, parents, for supporting our programs and our teachers here at Lipscomb. We know your insight, your understanding, and your support as we move forward are key components to the success of our school. It is with thanks to you and thanks to the Father that I enter this busy time of year, knowing that the ultimate goal here is to educate, inspire, and nurture children.

The Stephens Gift:
Last week at the Lipscomb University Associates Gala, Dr. Lowry announced that a donation of $10,000,000 has been given to the Campus School by long-time Lipscomb supporters Neika and Bill Stephens, through the Stephens Christian Trust. We have spent the past year planning and dreaming for the future of our school, and this gift makes possible many of the programs and facilities we have planned. As details unfold for our updated and new facilities, you will be hearing more information. We ask for prayers and your input as decisions are made. Many of our students have been writing thank-you letters to Mr. and Mrs. Stephens. I’m amazed by the mature and spirit-filled children you are rearing. Thank you for sharing them with us.

Annual Fund: Letters have recently been mailed to Campus School families detailing this year’s annual
fund goal. We hope you will be prayerful as you consider your role in Lipscomb’s future.

Disney Planet Challenge: Our third grade team of teachers, along with our science lab coordinator Ginger Reasonover, has entered the Disney Planet Challenge. This is a nationwide initiative encouraging environmental education and community environmental projects. Since DLES is a Performer Level Green School, this initiative is a “natural” as we educate our students. Our students are studying the effects of the improper disposal of medications on our water and soil. With the help of the Lipscomb University Pharmacy School, students are running tests on soil and water and documenting results. Our students will be holding a Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Day on Tuesday, November 15th from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Their flier is the 3rd page of this newsletter. Please help us recycle hazardous materials properly. Bring your recyclables next Tuesday to the front of the elementary building.

News and Notes:

Congratulations to our second through fourth graders who participated in Jump Rope for Heart on Friday, Nov. 4th. They raised approximately $9,000 for the American Heart Association.
Congratulations to our fourth grade chorus members who were chosen by audition to participate in the MTVA Honors Chorus: Lydia Guertin, Annabel Williams, and Sydney Willamson.
Thank you for your positive response to the adjustments we had to make due to the Granny White Pike road closure for the past month. We appreciate your flexibility.
This is the time of year when our students sign up to run in the April 27th ING Kids Marathon. You have received registration information from Belle Cromwell and Melanie Grogan by e-mail. Last year we had about 130 runners. The cost is $25 per participant if you register before December 31st. The race will fill up quickly.

Fourth graders and their parents enjoyed Pioneer Day yesterday, planned by our fourth grade team. We began the morning in chapel with Bob Wood, one of our members of the Board of Directors, talking to our P-1st through 4th graders about pioneers in the Bible—Abraham and Sarah, Moses, Joseph—people who went into a new land, trusting God to lead them to a better place, making the journey easier for the people coming behind them. This was a marvelous day of hands-on integrated learning!

Third graders help coordinate one-stop drop-off for green-minded consumers on Nov. 15

As part of an annual study of earth science issues, the David Lipscomb Elementary School third graders are studying this month the negative effects of medications that get into landfills and the water supply. The students will cap off their study by coordinating a household and e-waste collection on Tuesday, Nov. 15, America Recycles Day, at the elementary school.

Throwing away trash used to be a simple operation. But today with more awareness of the damaging effects of mercury, lead and arsenic on the environment, throwing out household trash – including light bulbs, batteries or old electronics -- has become much more complicated with various items having to be disposed of in various locations around town.

And now with more than 100 different pharmaceuticals having been detected in lakes, rivers, reservoirs and streams throughout the world, disposal of expired and leftover prescription and over-the-counter drugs has become an important issue. Pharmacists recommend that many drugs be returned at only designated “take-back” locations, but they are not often easy to find.

At the Nov. 15 collection, held at the David Lipscomb Elementary School site, 4517 Granny White Pike, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the third-graders will accept everything from old computer monitors to expired prescription drugs.

Acceptable items include various household waste items such as alkaline and rechargeable batteries, thermometers, fluorescent light bulbs and various recyclables; e-waste such as old VCRs, computers and TVs; and the Nashville Metropolitan Police Department will be on hand to accept expired and leftover prescription and over-the-counter medications.

The third graders will be learning about medications and their effect on the environment by touring the Lipscomb University College of Pharmacy labs on Tuesday, Nov. 8, Wednesday, Nov. 9, and Thursday, Nov. 10. They will also visit a wastewater treatment facility, create a public service announcement and hand out information flyers on proper disposal of medications at the Wal-Mart south of Old Hickory Blvd. on Nolensville Road on Saturday, Nov. 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

For years, pharmacists have instructed patients to flush leftover medications down the toilet, but now that practice is having ill effects on the nation’s water table, said Ginger Reasonover, the science laboratory coordinator at the elementary school, who has worked with the third graders to study the issue.

In March of 2008 the Associated Press found that 24 major metropolitan areas had trace amounts of drugs in their water supply, meaning at least 41 million Americans have tiny levels of drugs in their drinking water.

Some, but not all, pharmacies and police stations will take back drugs, but it’s hard to know which ones offer the service, Reasonover said, and other pharmacies offer the option to return leftover drugs through the mail, but at a cost.

Patients have long been encouraged to dispose of their leftover medications immediately because of the need to protect children from accidental poisonings and to discourage patients self-medicating with antibiotics and thus increasing their resistance to the drugs.

But now that the Environmental Protection Agency has identified more than 100 individual pharmaceuticals and personal care products in the nation’s drinking water, simply flushing them can do more harm than good.

In an experiment in the school’s on-site garden, the third graders determined that throwing them away is also problematic, especially antibiotics, which can leech into the soil, making the soil antibiotic resistant. If crops are grown on that soil and we eat those plants, we also have the possibility to become more resistant to antibiotics, Reasonover said.

Fourth Grade Talent Show - Another Star-Studded Event

Last Friday our fourth graders performed for a packed gymnasium of parents and adoring elementary school fans. I love this event! It reminds me of the lazy summer days of childhood when my friends and I would dress up in our parents’ clothes, hang a bedspread over the clothesline and perform for each other.

Our philosophy here at DLES has been that our children need to be the ones to prepare for this performance, provide their props and costumes, and rehearse until they are ready to show their “stuff.” Ms. Collins and Ms. Harris audition the acts and choose those best-prepared. They provide some structure to the presentation, a program, and the piano. They let the children have one rehearsal in the gym. They choose the acts that are ready to go. The results are always surprising. We find children who have lovely singing voices, talents in dance, acting, and even drawing.

Childhood is about discovery, about finding out what talents lie within. Sometimes the students who may struggle with an academic subject far outshine the others in performing talent. God’s gifts to us are many and varied. Celebrate the successes of your children. They want you to delight in them.

Parents,

As we move rapidly through this new school year, I want to share with you the plans that continue to move forward in the Campus School, because it will impact the high quality experience your children will have at Lipscomb. We began this school year differently with Quantum Learning Training in levels one and two for teachers and administrators to bring us up to date on the latest research and strategies for teaching, learning, and critical thinking. We are already looking forward to levels three and four of Quantum Learning later this year.

Several other initiatives are moving forward that you need to know about as well. The following initiatives are in planning stages:

An early childhood focus for Pre-K and Kindergarten to parallel recommendations from NAEYC.
Develop a Pre-K through 12th grade plan for building technology skills applicable to post secondary study.
Create some new special programming or "academies" at the high school level in collaboration with the university.
Launching the Olweus Anti-bullying program campus wide in January. Some elements have already been implemented.
Enhancing our service learning program as a third major pillar of spiritual formation to emphasize service to others as a key component to living in the image of Jesus Christ. The first two pillars are embedded in daily Bible study and chapel.
A comprehensive study of all extracurricular programs for elementary through high school to know what else could be offered and how they might be funded.
An in-depth review of our facilities and develop a plan for our needs over the next ten years. This will also involve capital planning to address these needs.

Committees of faculty, administration, and members of the 2020 Leadership Council will work together this year to make these plans and dreams become a reality for your children. Lipscomb is a wonderful school with exciting new plans for the future. God has richly blessed us with many wonderful families represented by 1323 students this year.

Lipscomb (and George) Go to Vienna

Mrs. Lankford's second graders are excited to share the Vienna Experience with 28 Lipscomb University students from now through December. "George," the class mascot, is traveling to Vienna, Austria for the fall semester with LU students participating in the study abroad program. Mrs. Lankford's students will be corresponding with university students as they travel throughout Europe learning about different cultures, languages, and landscapes. Elementary students will be recording and graphing miles traveled and hearing about the region's different foods, famous sites, and fun facts. Elementary students have been arriving each morning, anxious to check email, hoping to hear of daily adventures from George and his experiences!

It's Easy Being Green

Hard to imagine we were sweltering just a few short days ago as we now enjoy the beginning of our second day of cool, crisp relief... though the near-100-degree temps last Friday didn't keep the crowd down from Second Grade's, Frog and Toad Picnic. Moms and dads, grandparents, aunts and uncles joined their kiddos for a hoppin' good time at the annual event celebrating the students' study of one of nature's most intriguing cold-blooded creatures. From the examination of metomorphosis in Science to completing the entire Frog and Toad collection in Reading, DLES second graders had a lot of new information to share with loved ones about the enchanting amphibians.

As hard as it is to believe, we are now officially two weeks into the new school year 2011-12. We have had an exciting time of catching up on summer adventures and realizing the changes we have all gone through in just a matter of months. Many of our students have gotten taller, braver and, of course, smarter! Our teachers have taken part in campus-wide training in multiple new initiatives, increasing their ability to impact the children even more. And we are so humbled by the fact that in spite of recent economic downturn, our PK-12th grade campus continues to increase in numbers, allowing us to serve an even greater number of students, a true, true blessing. At DLCS, you can find growth taking place everywhere you turn, and for that we are so very thankful. We hope you'll enjoy this year's journey with us... it's gonna be a good one!

Finishing Strong

I think I probably did my first dissection lab in high school... certainly not before middle school, but with so many wonderful resources at our disposal, and a one-of-a-kind connection to a booming university, our fourth graders were able to complete their study of animals under the direction of Lipscomb University's, Tamera Klingbyll. There were a few turned up noses to the idea of opening up Silver Shimmers to investigate what was inside, but it didn't take long before every student was engaged and intrigued by the remarkable ways in which God creates.

Our fourth graders - soon-to-be-middle-schoolers - only have a handful of days left on our campus before they venture a little further north to the main campus where a myriad of wonderful adventures await them. They have been great leaders for this school during the 2010-2011 school year, they are continuing to learn in these last days, and they are most certainly finishing strong!

Spring is here, and there is no better welcome than to stroll through our pre-kindergarten and kindergarten common area, soak up the sun through the skylights, and admire the beautiful works of art our youngest have produced. Both Monet and Kandinsky are wonderfully represented by pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students. Ms. Harper, DLES Art Teacher, believes in teaching students not only about the mechanics of art, but the process. It is quite common to find DLES students working on artistic projects for weeks at a time, learning what commitment to quality truly requires... a lifelong skill our children will use for years to come.

Beyond School Hours

What takes place during school hours is extremely important, of course. But DLES also knows parents need opportunities for their children after school as well. Our Extended Day program offers families the ability to work their full day while their students participate in options beyond school hours. Extended Day is available until 5:30 every day and allows children time for outside play, art studio time, gym time, and more. Additionally, students can also be a part of enrichment options after school such as our music academy (PK-4 grades) and our newest offering, chess club (2-4 grades), pictured here.

Grandparent's Day 2010

DLES loves Christmas, and DLES loves grandparents. We celebrated both today in our first of two performances. The audience was full of family members who came from both near and far to enjoy the music the children have been working so hard to prepare. It was a pleasure to see so many grandparents smiling and proudly cheering on their little ones. If you were not able to attend the performance today, make sure you come tomorrow. Congratulations to Kindergarten Teacher, Becky Collins, who received the Hubert Smothers Award at the TAIS conference held in Chattanooga earlier this week. Only five other teachers in the state received this award. The criteria for the award includes excellent teaching, a love of learning new things, and a passion for sharing with the broader community. Those of us at DLES know that Becky is often asked to share her love of outdoor learning with other schools. She has been instrumental in our work with environmental education for many years. This year, through her efforts, we won the Eastman Good Sports Always Recycle Award which gave us $500 to add to our environmental efforts. Well done, Ms. Collins! You make us proud!

It's Finally Here

It has been a long time coming, but our brand new Pre-First/First Grade playground is officially "open for business!" Following a ribbon-cutting celebration hosted by Mrs. Farmer, Principal, and Dr. Hammond, Headmaster of David Lipscomb Campus School, along with our two PTO Presidents, Stacey King and Lori Nixon, the children raced to be the first to experience the newest addition to the DLES campus. They have patiently waited day after day, on the other side of the fence, watching dirt being moved, equipment being built, and mulch being spread. Although excitement was mounting this morning, over 100 children took a moment to bow their heads in a prayer of thanksgiving for all of those parents, grandparents, and supporters of the school who made this moment possible, and joined in asking for a special blessing of safety for the thousands of children who will enjoy this gift for years to come. Thank you to each and every giving heart who has supported this effort. You have put smiles on so many faces - adults and children alike!

Deciduous? Are you serious?

I was down in the kindergarten area last week when a five-year-old answered a question with the word 'deciduous' - yes, you read correctly, deciduous! I had to stop in my tracks and politely interrupt to ask if I heard what I thought I did. The class was beginning their weekly science lab with Ginger Reasonover, Science Lab Coordinator, and starting their study of leaf varieties. It is always incredibly interesting to me how easily youngsters soak up information and retain it. At such a young age, their little brains are so primed with millions of neurological pathways just waiting to fire. In fact, if they're not utilized, they begin to die. Engaging them in intellectual conversation and learning through experiences and play is exactly what they are made to do, and it is fascinating to watch!

By the way, a big congratulations is in order for Mrs. Reasonover who is pictured here helping out Mrs. Felts' kindergarten class. She recently traveled to Knoxville to receive an award presented by Project Learning Tree, a division of the National Forestry Service. Ginger was named 2010 Environmental Educator of the Year.

We're so proud of the work Ginger continues to do to mentor other schools as they work toward Green School designation. She serves on several local and state boards of environmental groups seeking to educate the children of our community and to raise awareness of the citizens of the region.

Thank you, Ginger, for your significant contributions to our environmental efforts here at the elementary school and for representing Lipscomb in the larger community.

Go Into All the World

DLES is very excited about the new additions we have made to our faculty this year. Ms. Britney Harper is one of them and just as excited to be here! I wanted to share with you the creative way in which she's integrating faith and learning into her art classes. She recently talked with me about her theme verse for the year, Mark 16:15, "Go into all the world and preach the good news..." Her desire is to help her students understand that if we are truly to go into "all the world" then we need to know a little something about the world. So, Ms. Harper has decided to teach art from around the world with all classes, Pre-Kindergarten through Fourth Grade. The first stop on the journey is Mexico, Central America, and South America. The photos being shared in the slideshow are Fourth Grade's, Mexican Metal Tooling. The elements of art and principles of design this unit covers are color and pattern, the two prominent characteristics of Latin American Art. We invite you to come and view the pieces decorating our halls. They are truly stunning!

Our Learning Enhancement Program (LEP) has served numerous children across our PK-12 campuses for over 18 years. An on-site tutoring service, LEP has offered resources to students who need some extra academic help to those who have tested gifted and require extra challenge. Marlene Butler, our elementary LEP coordinator, is a huge advocate for understanding different learning styles and, as you will read in this USA Today Article (click bold print), imaginative and outdoor play. As a Performer Level Status Green School, DLES encourages daily outdoor activities, both in fun and learning, throughout all of its grades, utilizing its state-of-the-art outdoor classroom and wide-open green spaces. We are proud of the work we are doing in this area, and we are extremely proud of Marlene's "voice" in the included article. Thousands of responses are sent to USA Today everyday, and one of ours was chosen to be heard - now that is something worth talking about!

We're Off to a Great Start!

Tomorrow will officially be one full week of school completed, and we're off to a great start! Having our families and children back in the building just feels good. Please remember that tomorrow evening is Meet the Teacher Night. We begin at 6:00PM and will finish up at 7:30PM. It's a perfect time to learn about the year your child's teacher has planned for him or her, ask questions, and get to know other families with whom you'll be sharing life for the next several months. You'll also have the opportunity to look at outerwear provided by our Booster Club and find out more about other ways to become involved and support the school. All will enjoy a family treasure hunt, and of course, ice cream (Blue Bell, to be exact)! Two Weeks and Counting

As of today, we are merely two weeks away from our official first day of school! Where the time goes, I do not know... a sure sign I am getting older.

We are terribly excited about a few new faces you will be seeing in our halls this year. After 39 years of service, Ms. Nancy Lochridge retired. She will be dearly missed. Filling her art position is Britney Harper. She comes to us from Georgia with her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Georgia.

Kathleen Moss, a most kind and gentle pre-kindergarten teacher and servant of this school for a very long time, has also retired. That position has been filled by Emily Hammond. Emily earned her Elementary Education degree from Lipscomb University, and her M., Ed. in Reading from MTSU. She taught in Metro Nashville schools as well as the Harpeth Hills Church of Christ pre-kindergarten program.

To round out the list, we are thrilled to welcome a new third grade instructor, Sarah Williamson. Sarah received her BA in Communications from Abilene University as well as her M, Ed. from Pepperdine University with a certification in ESL. She taught several years in California before re-locating with her family to Nashville where she has most recently been a pre-kindergarten teacher at Otter Creek Church of Christ.

As you can see, we have made three very fine additions to our faculty. They are eager to meet you and look forward to serving DLES children this year.

It is a pretty unique experience to be able to acquire a Pre-Kindergarten through Master's degree-level education all in one institution, but with Lipscomb, it's possible! I was touring a family a couple of weeks ago when I made my way to the "T" - where the 3rd grade hall ends in 4th grade's territory. Lined along both sides were cereal boxes, creatively decorated and named, adorned with facts galore about numerous - and notorious - individuals. I'll let our featured 4th graders, Anna Grace and Sutton, explain more in their videos below. Needless to say, the visiting family was terribly impressed and appreciated the way our teachers help our students learn. A practice of research and writing skills, history, art, literacy, and more all rolled up into a creative and hands-on project... and I bet the kids had a ball!

Reaching for the Stars

We were honored yesterday with a visit from Captain Barry Wilmore, pilot of NASA Space Shuttle, Atlantis. He spent all morning and afternoon treating our students to a look at space from his perspective as well as taking many questions from his multiple audiences. Out of the thousands of requests NASA receives from schools across the country to send representatives to speak with their students, we were certainly ecstatic he chose to spend time with ours. Considering all of the work our third grades do for their annual Space Day year after year, and the Monarchs in Space venture our kindergarteners undertook this school year, this was a well-deserved honor for our faculty, staff, and children.

We invite you to visit our school very soon so that you can find our students' "out-of-this-world" work as displayed in the halls and foyer. From third grade creative writing pieces to kindergarten graphings of their Monarch control group versus the experimental group on Space Shuttle Atlantis, our students never fail to reach for the stars. A Lost Art

In the world of email and texting, good writing is quickly becoming a lost art. But, not so in Ms. Wanda Lynn's second grade class. Her students are fortunate enough to have her share her passion for writing and children's literature with them on a daily basis. In fact, our entire faculty and staff was treated to a wonderfully insightful in-service session led by Ms. Lynn, sharing with all of us components of good writing and how to encourage our students to be successful authors at any age.

Her ideas and approach used in the classroom are terribly creative and effective. The shoe pictured here is a perfect example. During in-service, we were asked to give a "voice" to the shoe placed on our group's table. Participants could have the shoe "say" anything it wanted. This one was a bit sassy commenting it was "a little jealous of the boot that had walked in the clean, white snow," but "ready at a moment's notice for a night on the town!" It was so much fun to hear the creative ideas our teacher's offered and watch a seemingly inanimate object come alive on paper!

Ms. Lynn holds Writing Workshop each week after school for second grade students who are interested in participating. In her words, Writing Workshop is explained:

"A series of mini lessons that teach what makes good writing, Writing Workshop reviews the six traits... ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency and conventions, as well as presentation. Then these traits are the focus during the stages of the writing process - prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. In Writing Workshop children are exposed to good writing again and again; children learn to recognize what strong writing sounds like. Good picture books and chapter books are used for children to recognize detailed descriptions and fluent sentences. I feel strongly that children need daily opportunities to write so that they become invested in the writing process."

One point Ms. Lynn made during in-service that truly resonated is how important it is to understand the connection between thinking and speaking creatively, so when it's time to write in such a way, it comes more easily. So, in Ms. Lynn's classroom you will not hear children asking simply, "Can I get a drink of water?" but rather, "May I get a cool, refreshing drink of water from the bubbler in the hallway?" We laugh, but it really does make a difference. Come by and read some of her seven and eight year olds' writing pieces... quite impressive.

A Most Impressive Day

I often consider how different school looks today as opposed to when I was in elementary school, or even my parents and grandparents. I remember a whole lot of sitting and listening, and desperately trying to retain the information. It's what we knew to do at the time, and yet experience and research has continued to mold educational practices into so much more of a hands-on, experiential approach.

DLES took this to new heights, literally, as it celebrated its annual Space Day. With the help of so many dedicated parents, our third grade hall was transformed from floor to ceiling to represent our solar system, offering every student, pre-kindergarten through fourth grade, multiple opportunities to journey through space as they travelled the black-light-glowing corridor on a daily basis. But what received "awesomes" or "wows" from the students, and utter amazement from visiting adults, was an extremely effective teaching experience as members of our faculty and third grade teachers designed an academically challenging and exciting unit for their students.

SPACE DAY, 2010

~ Integrating all subjects into the space unit, all objects in the solar system were covered, as well as the study of Earth's rotation and revolution, along with the history of space travel.

~ With every concept taught, our belief in God being the divine creator was reaffirmed.

~ Kicking off the final day with the Space Day Pledge, our Pledge of Allegience, and the singing of the Star Spangled Banner, students participated in "stations" throughout the day. This year included a visitor from the Huntsville Space and Rocket Center providing a one-hour workshop for her listeners, a mission control station utilizing our wireless laptops, a rocket station demonstrating the science behind the 2-liter rocket design and ending in our third grade students' individual launches, as well as a visit to the Star Lab - a portable, and inflatable, indoor planetarium. We were also pleased to have a special guest from Vanderbilt University, a specialist in studying the effects of space on astronauts, who shared a powerpoint presentation of those astronauts in space.

~ The unit concluded with a visit to the Adventure Science Museum Planetarium.

What began years ago as a couple of afternoons of science experiments has turned into a multi-week event. DLES students are so fortunate to not only learn, but experience their learning first-hand. Looking forward to Space Day 2011!

Turn on Your Heartlight

I vividly remember being at a birthday party when I was seven years old and hearing Neil Diamond on the radio singing, "Turn on Your Heartlight." It was at the peak of ET's popularity... you remember the movie don't you? Well, I loved the song as much as the movie and since our kickoff for Hearts for Haiti, I have not been able to get the chorus - especially the first couple of lines - out of my head. The hearts are already lining our walls. I have no doubt they will all connect and then some. Remember 25 cents buys your child a heart to be hung in the hall with all proceeds going to relief efforts through Healing Hands, Int. We will be collecting from now until February 11th. For more specifics, see Ms. Farmer's letter posted earlier this week. Thank you for helping us shine a little hopeful light on the people of Haiti!

No amount of snow, slush, or cold winds could have kept DLES students down yesterday! It was a big one, kicking off our first day back with a bang! Second graders held their annual Trade Day. They used play money to encourage sharpening math skills and were asked to set up shop complete with advertisement and a logo on the front of their store.

There was everything from decorative erasers to baked goods, massages, and manicures. Lots of parents and other classes visited, browsed, and bought. Watch a couple of successful owners share the story behind their success:

They started filing in around 6:30 AM and made a line a mile long by the time 7:30 rolled around. Father's Breakfast took place for two days last week and was a HUGE success. Plenty of biscuits, gravy, sausage and eggs to go around... not to mention lots and lots of love shown between dads and their children - talk about "food for the soul."

Hearts for Haiti

Our PK-12 Lipscomb Family will be combining our efforts to respond to the need in Haiti over the next few weeks. We are collaborating in order to increase our impact. This effort will be called "Hearts for Haiti." The French Club at DLHS has taken the lead in the project, with each of the three schools responding in different age-appropriate ways. From Feb. 1st until Feb. 11th, we will be taking collections to be donated to Healing Hands International for Haiti Relief.

Here at the elementary school, our students will bring in coins (we would also take bills) to add to the collection jar in each classroom. A small paper heart will be hung in the hallway to represent each quarter given in the classroom. We are hoping to connect each grade level’s hearts to form a long chain in several sections of the building. We will be totaling our donations through Feb. 11th and adding them to the middle and high school’s donations.

If you want to send a check instead of cash, you need to make it payable to Healing Hands International with “Haiti Relief” written on the “for” line. As announced last week, until March 1st, donations can be made to Haiti Relief and reported as charitable donations in 2009 or 2010.

Thank you in advance for the money you will send. Whatever the amount, we know God can achieve big results with any gift. It is through this kind of service that young children learn to be responsible adults who truly treat others as they would like to be treated. We hope you will talk with your child about sharing with others; here at school, we will be seeking ways to make this experience not only a service project, but also a teachable moment.

Tennessee Wildlife

A couple of weeks ago, our first graders began their unit on animals. Doug Markum, the gentleman in the picture, is from the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency (TWRA) and brought Tennessee animal pelts, teeth, bones, and more to show as he talked about wildlife in our fine state.
Following his visit, the students selected a Tennessee animal to research. They modeled their chosen animals out of clay and built a 3-D habitat to house each of them. I'll try to get pictures of the finished products - pretty impressive, I must say!

70 Ways to Make it Snow

As some of you might have seen, our entire third grade made a human snowflake last week in anticipation for the incoming snow. This picture was featured two different times on Channel 4, much to our delight! In addition to creating the design out on our playground for this great snapshot, the students also compiled a book of writings entitled, 70 Ways to Make it Snow, a compilation of each child's personal snow ritual. For those of us who enjoyed the beautiful white stuff Thursday, Friday and Saturday - wouldn't we agree - it worked!

We're B-a-a-a-a-a-a-c-k...

It seems like yesterday we were gearing up for the holidays, anticipating the magic of the season, doing Christmas performances for beloved grandparents on Grandparent's Day - WHICH, by the way, was WONDERFUL! I will post a slideshow soon of the festivities... so much fun! Time, as always, has flown and we're into the new year as if we'd never left the last one. Yesterday I was intrigued by what might be happening on the first day back and wasn't disappointed. We really have the most wonderful students and teachers in the whole, wide world. You do know that, don't you? We invite you to come and see for yourself, if you haven't already. In the meantime, the following is what I discovered and heard about the first school day of 2010. It was a keeper!

**Singing Chapel began with 30 songs of praise in 30 minutes - 20 + 10... Get it? Happy 2010! The kids LOVED it!

**Ms. Collins' Kindergarten enjoyed telling all about their Christmas break adventures and celebrating the recent snow flurries. According to one student, they FINALLY got to mark "snow" on their weather report.

**Ms. Seay's and Ms. Sansom's pre-first group started their unit on the Arctic and Antarctic. They're studying the Eskimo way of life and God's creatures that live in these harsh climates (plus the beautiful Northern Lights). The children are even making Eskimo children to put out in the hallway. You gotta see them!

**Second and third grade classes had very meaningful conversations about resolutions, what it means to have good intentions and follow through. Third graders came to the conclusion that seeing those intentions to the end is not only for the good of moms, dads, and teachers, but they themselves will feel the pride of meeting their personal goals. Curious about their resolutions? Second graders offered such ideas as "work on better handwriting," "be a better friend," and "do homework without being told!” Third grade shared the desire to "get more math objectives," "read more," and "not get in trouble as much!" You gotta love the honesty of children!

Needless to say, it's so easy to come back to such a place where God is front and center and learning is all about. Our DLES family wishes you a super duper New Year! We can't wait to see what God has planned!

It's hard to catch one's breath this time of year, is it not? Everyday for weeks I've been planning to post, but we've had so many daily activities worthy of blogging and capturing in photos, that I keep putting it off until I can gather a few minutes to observe, collect, upload, describe, and... whew! There's just a ton happening within our school's walls, and it's wonderful! Take a look at this list and enjoy the slide show following!

** The week of Thanksgiving we held our annual lunch and served over 750 students and family members. The halls were packed to the gills with the sights and smells of one of our favorite holidays.

** Kindergarten classes had exciting hands-on learning activities during Indian Day. They experienced the life and times of our Native American friends, complete with homemade corn cakes and butter.

** Second Grade topped off their studies of Colonial Times by reliving Colonial Days, as they learned to write with real quill pens, heard tall tales from a visiting storyteller, and welcomed a pioneer friend who shared artifacts and information of the times.

** Following Thanksgiving break, First Grade rode the "Polar Express" to the upper campus and had their own private viewing of the well-loved movie. Donned in their comfy PJs, they capped off the day with hot chocolate!

** To coincide with our Performer Level Green School status, each grade is assigned one of five Green School components to study. Third graders worked hard to organize "Hazardous Waste Day" in conjunction with their assigned area of study, and invited our Lipscomb community and the area to do away with hazardous waste the earthy-friendly way.

** Third Grade also spent some quality time visiting a local nursing home and spreading Christmas cheer. What a service!

How I would love to have more time to venture around the school and sit in on classes more often. Everytime I have the opportunity to experience a lesson by one of our teachers, I think about how I wish I could erase years off my current age and become a Lipscomb Mustang myself. I wanted to be a second grader a couple of weeks ago. I knew something exciting was going to take place that morning when our Science Lab Coordinator, Ginger Reasonover, came in the door dressed head to toe in clothing labeling her entire skeletal system.

In the slideshow below you'll see in pictures what students learned about their valuable bone structure. It was a fully rounded class complete with music and movement, lecture, hands-on experience (while piecing together the system with candy bones), and of course, Mrs. Reasonover's personal human display. The children seemed to love it, and what's more important, I bet they could answer some pretty intricate questions about what they learned. Now that's the way to do school!

Jesus Takes Top Spot

If ever there were a question about the spiritual impact DLES has on its students, the answer was loud and clear at Big Chapel last Thursday. After a spirit-filled song service led by one of our fourth grade teachers Mr. Adams, Mr. Chisam followed with a discussion about the school-wide survey conducted to find out our students' top ten things for which they are most thankful. The survey choices were compiled by our own third grade, with a write-in option, and distributed to representatives of each grade, first through fourth. The children anxiously awaited the answers as each envelope was opened and read, and with every "drum roll, please..." the excitement grew.

The Top Ten Reasons to Be Thankful results:

Go ahead... dry the tears and take a big breath of joy. I know many of us who witnessed it did. To know that this was entirely student-driven, and to watch hundreds of hands go up in celebration for such meaningful reasons... well, it is simply a testimony to the presence of God in this place and the hearts of your children and their peers.

I Know that I Know

Several days ago I was walking down the hall to run an errand. Rather than go the direction I'd intended, I picked up a scent - oddly enough - of Barbasol??? Was that really what I smelled? So I followed my curiosity to the third grade hallway, made my way into Mrs. Sanders' classroom, and sure enough... my nose had not lied. There, in the midst of foam-covered desks, a most-talented teacher (with shaving lotion can in hand) was reading off spelling words, one by one. To some this might seem a bit strange, but to those of us who love to observe master teachers finding unique ways to reach children and make the learning "stick", it was a great moment. The students were practicing spelling, sharpening their handwriting skills, and enjoying every minute of it. The power of multi-sensory learning... As I read recently in an article at early-advantage.com, "Multi-sensory learning takes advantage of the way our senses—hearing, sight, and touch, primarily—reinforce one another while learning. Each sense builds toward a more complete experience of a concept or idea." When done well, students at the end of such an experience know that they know what they are learning... and that can make all the difference!

A Visit from Dr. Seuss, Mem Fox, Esphyr Slobodkina and More!

One of the wonderful aspects of our campus school is the connection we have to our university. We have an extremely strong education program on the main campus - undergraduate and graduate - and so we are blessed in many ways with their talented students throughout the year. Dressed in costume from head to toe, Lipscomb University students came to several classes yesterday and shared stories as well as information about their notorious author. For those of you who still get goosebumps when you visit the children's section of the library like myself, you would have loved it. I know our students sure did.

Lions, and Tigers, and Bears - OH MY!

Well, not really... but close! How about a Bearded Dragon, Chinchilla, and Gerbil? The 2nd grade has been heavy into their habitat unit and hosted the annual Animal Day to make it a true learning experience. Mr. King, one of our own parents and resident veterinarian, was on site to provide information (along with a few furry, and slimy, animals). Students were invited to bring their own pets, and Mrs. McCollum was even seen touching the snake - a bit uncertain, mind you, but touched it none-the-less. Thank you to Mr. King, parents, and, OF COURSE, our fine feathered, hairy, and scaly friends, for making our morning of learning EXTRA-special!

Another HUGE Success!

As a "newbie" to the elementary school, I was not aware of the sheer magnitude of such an event as Nothin' But Fun Day! Within a matter of hours our school - inside and out - was transformed into an even more student-inspired, teacher-and-parent-approved campus. Blow-ups filled the gym, carnival-like booths lined our playground... they even drilled holes in our asphalt to anchor the massive tent. It was extraordinary! PTO parents spent hours and hours in preparation for this well-attended and much-anticipated day, and for that we are all thankful.

Anything for our children, right?

To close down the evening, many of us made our way up to the high school football field to watch the Mustangs play. The weather had been so temperamental the entire day, yet the poncho-clad fans didn't let it stop them. Thinking over the exciting day of children's smiles, helpful volunteers, and sweet teachers doling out hugs and high-fives to their current and past students, I couldn't help but think, "God is here." Those of us filling the bleachers were given yet another sign of His presence as one of the most beautiful rainbows I've ever seen arched its way over the playing field. What a marvelous way to end a fantastic day!

We NEED you! Anyone interested in being a DLES Ambassador, I have a wonderful job specifically for you! Just around the corner - November 5th, 6th, and 22nd- are our annual Open House opportunities. I have a terrific stack of postcards to advertise the events, but a team effort would be even more effective. Brainstorm places to make them available... your churches, your neighborhood association meetings, your mom's groups, your exercise classes, your clients... EVERYWHERE!

It's as easy as 1 -2 -3!

The sweetest sounds...

So, last Thursday was the first time I'd had a chance to get to Chapel before the children arrived. Was I ever impressed with their entrance into the gymnasium, as they came through the doors enthusiastically singing praise songs and continuing until all four grades were seated. It brought tears to my eyes; hundreds of sweet voices raising in song to worship! What an awesome experience.

As you see in our slideshow, we had a special guest, Youth Minister Andrew Sowards of Antioch Church of Christ, who spoke to the group about the importance of training and preparation, referencing back to the well-known Proverb 22:6 scripture, "Train up a child in the way he should go..." He related spiritual training to his juggling accomplishments. The children were mesmerized, to say the least. It was very entertaining and brought the point home well.

Our time together ended with a spirited celebration of "Farmer's Favorites," and "Caught Being Good Awards," our principal's favorite classwork picks of the week and teachers' nominations for star students of the week, respectively. I know I'm still somewhat new, but I just don't know that the excitement for such a place is going to wear off anytime soon. These kinds of occurrences happen on a daily basis, and once again I find myself in great appreciation for our DLES!

I was fortunate enough to see a message sent to one of our third grade teachers, Chuck Chisam, and I couldn't help but share some of it with you. I know for many of us parents, the realization of other influences on our children can be frightening... especially when considering their time at school. We all know they spend more hours awake in their school environment than they do even with their own family. Where they are can make a HUGE difference! When you read what's below, take a moment to thank God for yet another blessing today; the blessing of making it possible to be a part of such a special, special place.

When I visited your room and saw you sitting there in your rocking chair reading your very quiet class a story before lunchtime, I thought of the lucky children that were going to sit at the feet of a very kind, gentle man this year . . . what a role model you are for so many. This is what makes this school what it is! And when I read your weekly emails on the Fruit of the Spirit, where else can emails be sent out on distribution lists with that kind of rich content? Thank you, Chuck, for all you do for all the children with whom you come in contact.

You Can Have it Both Ways

One of my favorite shows to watch comes on PBS, Saturday mornings - Everyday Food. A production of Martha Stewart and hosted by five VERY down-to-earth women, the recipes are actually quite normal. Yet, for this full-time working mom with two little ones, it kicks chicken nuggets and fries up a notch! I was watching this weekend and loved a couple of snack ideas I'm planning to add to my own rotation. I thought some of you might like them as well. Especially as we're entering the time of year when Middle Tennessee can't make up its mind on what kind of weather it's having, these hot AND cold snacks are quite handy for after school. Both are make-ahead friendly, ready and waiting for you to determine if it's a sweatshirt or shorts kind of day. Frozen Fruit Salad

Ingredients
Serves 4
2 bananas
2 cups red grapes, seedless
2 cups green grapes, seedless
Directions
1. Peel bananas; cut crosswise into 1/2-inch-thick slices. Place banana slices and grapes on a small rimmed baking sheet in a single layer. Freeze until fruit is frozen throughout, at least 1 hour. (Once frozen, fruit can be placed in a resealable plastic bag and kept frozen up to 2 months.) Divide fruit among four bowls, and serve.

Warm Fruit-and-Nut Snack

Ingredients
Makes 12 servings
2 cups assorted dried fruit, such as apricots (slivered), raisins, cranberries, or cherries
2 cups salted nuts, such as peanuts, almonds, or mixed**

Directions
1. In a medium airtight container, combine fruit and nuts. To store, keep at room temperature, up to 1 month.
2. Preheat oven or toaster-oven to 350. For 1 serving: Spread 1/3 cup mixture on a small rimmed baking sheet; bake until warm, about 5 minutes. Serve.

** I might suggest pretzels in place of nuts if there's an allergy issue in your family.

A Hula Hoop and Song

Hasn't someone out there had a great-aunt who would never miss a chance to grab your cheeks and squeal how cute you are? How about the stranger in the grocery aisle patting your belly asking the baby's due date? Personal space. Many people get it, and so many others do not.

The kindergarten teachers decided to tackle this concept with their classes early on, hoping to help them discover one another's personal space and how to stay safe by respecting it. We have a terrific group of K-5s, but for any parent of one - including myself - we all know what an issue this can be at times.

I was excited to meet with this crowd first thing this morning. We discussed hands and feet, elbows and even teeth (suggested by a participant in the front row), reminding ourselves that if they're on our body, they're ours; we keep them to ourselves. A hula hoop provided a great visual of the space "bubble" we each require. The children were cute as could be standing and rounding their arms in front of them, "floating" and practicing to stay in their own space as they moved about to a bubble song. I knew the concept had resonated when I asked for some ideas on how to deal with others getting in our space. One little boy eagerly raised his hand and exclaimed, "You could say, 'Hey! You're poppin' my bubble!'" I just love my job.

Later on this afternoon, I happened to think of a simple song to help your young ones remember what we talked about today. To the tune of Frere Jacques (Are You Sleeping), sing these words with your child whenever you can. Oh, and maybe - just maybe - you might save someone's cheeks, and mommy dignity, in years to come.

I can keep my hands and body to myself (Morning bells are ringing, Morning bells are ringing)

We've Only Just Begun

Don't you remember your first days of school, especially having experienced the unusually low temps we've had this weekend? The chill in the air certainly brings back pictures of my first grade teacher's big, wooden, apple earrings and the smell of Elmer's glue, not to mention the cafeteria's version of "grilled cheese and chili." It's such a terrific time of year, full of excitement and anticipation for what's to come.

Our school got off to a roaring start last Monday! By the week's end, the entire group - faculty, staff, and students - was working like a well-oiled machine with smiles everywhere you turned. "Meet the Teacher Night" was a HUGE success at standing-room-only. Our university president, Dr. Lowry, shared some wonderful news about the tremendous growth and success Lipscomb University has experienced and promised his continued commitment to helping make our campus school better and better. He was able to spend a good amount of time visiting classrooms and listening to the question-and-answer sessions teachers provided their students' families. There was such energy in the air, two calls over the intercom had to be made to encourage visitors to head home... what a wonderful problem to have!

We've only just begun, and we still have some spots available in a couple of grades. Spread the word about the remarkable school we have. It's guaranteed to change lives!
